Of course we’re blessed in Scarborough to have our pick of beaches to choose from but for when you fancy something a bit different, or want to avoid getting covered in sand, there are several fantastic outdoor alternatives not too far from town. Whether you want to soak up the sun and relax by the pool, challenge yourself with an open water swimming course or give wild swimming a go, you can do it all nearby. We’ve put together a list here of some of the different outdoor swimming options close by, some of which you might not be aware of - including a wild swimming spot voted in the top 20 in the UK.
5. Falling Foss
Not far from Whitby is this idyllic spot in the North York Moors secluded and surrounded by woodland. It has a 10m waterfall and deep plunge pool underneath which is a perfect spot for some light wild swimming.
6. Thomason Foss
In the middle of beautiful woodland, this wild swimming spot in the heart of the moors near Beck Hole, sits under a waterfall. Steam trains pass nearby making this one of the more unusual places to take a dip. Photo: Jonathan Gawthorpe
7. Helmsley Open Air Pool
Though not set to reopen until June 21, this is Yorkshire’s only 25m heated open air pool. In the heart of the countryside you will feel like you’re on holiday on a sunny day here. They are taking bookings for the summer. Photo: Neil Silk
8. Allerthorpe Lakeland Park
For more serious swimmers, this park near Pocklington houses a man made lake with a maximum depth of 7 foot. The course is 400m long and swim sessions are held throughout the week for different age groups.
