Of course we’re blessed in Scarborough to have our pick of beaches to choose from but for when you fancy something a bit different, or want to avoid getting covered in sand, there are several fantastic outdoor alternatives not too far from town. Whether you want to soak up the sun and relax by the pool, challenge yourself with an open water swimming course or give wild swimming a go, you can do it all nearby. We’ve put together a list here of some of the different outdoor swimming options close by, some of which you might not be aware of - including a wild swimming spot voted in the top 20 in the UK.
1. Alpamare
Back open again for the summer, there are two outdoor pools at Alpamare to enjoy in warm weather, a garden pool and the infinity pool looking out to sea. For the adrenaline junkies there are also slides to enjoy. Photo: Richard Ponter
2. North Yorkshire Water Park
This water park at Wykeham lake is home to many water sports but also a 250m open water swim challenge. Sessions run on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and weekends and water temperature averages 18 degrees. Photo: Helen Ainstrop
3. Filey Paddling Pool
One for the those with little children, the paddling pool at Filey is right next to the beach so you can enjoy all the views and fun of the beach with none of the hassle of sand in everyone’s clothes. Photo: Google
4. Whitby West Cliff Paddling Pool
Another good option for families and groups with smaller children, this free paddling pool has lovely views out to see and plenty of space outside for sitting. There’s also a mini golf course close by to make a full afternoon of it. Photo: Google
