The seaside summer show, often associated with elderly red nosed comics, simpering sopranos and past-their-sell-by-date chorus girls, was deemed as dead as a dodo.
That was up until 10 years ago when Tony Peers rebranded the faded jaded end-of-the-pier show turning it into a sophisticated, glittering musical extravaganza.
Peers is passionate about creating the best and this year with Movies Meets the Musicals he has triumphed with a show that must rank as one of his very best.
Fast, furious and fabulously costumed the show is show is pure family entertainment. It’s an eclectic and sparkling mix of song and dance that seamlessly unfurls into what can only be described as a “musical marathon”.
From Oscar winning songs from the movies to Broadway and West End shows, the talented cast of five weave their way through over 50 musical numbers with show-stopping vocal harmonies that we haven’t experienced in Peer’s shows before.
The “fabulous five” have amazing vocal power, vitality and energy and the ability to change their style and persona with their costumes.
Linda Newport’s production has energy and style using the limited resources and size of the stage to its full potential with levels, mini pyrotechnics, lighting and amazing portable scaffolding infused with smoke that gives the West Side Story sequence mood and substance.
Newport herself integrates well, but really comes into her own with Sunset Boulevard’s As If We Never Said Goodbye.
Simon Hollosi is an amazing performer with a fine tenor voice and the ability to change his style so successfully and with such ease. Likewise Mark Carnell flips beautifully between the different genres of musical theatre with a plethora of different songs.
Completing the “fabulous five” are Zoe Clarke and Charlotte Heath singing and dancing their way superbly through Dirty Dancing, Hairspray, Westside Story, Ghosts and the fabulous Bond medley.
From curtain up to the fabulous Priscilla finale, complete with the “bus”, Movies Meets the Musicals is an infectiously happy show.
Movies Meets the Musicals runs at Scarborough Spa every Thursday, Friday and Saturday until September 24, daily at 8pm.
