A Whitby musician is on the up Down Under after his band was signed by an Australian record label.

Lee Jones (31) who grew up in the town, is currently wowing the crowds as part of new-wave group The Solicitors.

The Melbourne-based band, which has been snapped up by indie label Popboomerang, released their debut EP in July and have just launched their new single, Quicksand.

The group has also been picked up by a Japanese record label.

Their huge success comes just a year after singer/songwriter Lee decided to swap the North Yorkshire coast for the south coast of Australia.

Lee, who worked at The Marine Hotel, in Marine Parade, said: “It all came about when I decided to move to Australia in 2012 and I really wanted to hit the ground running. So I recorded some demos and posted on some forums - I think I wrote something like ‘I’m looking to form a band in a month’. I didn’t know much about the music scene in Melbourne but people started replying. I found some people who are cool and met up with them all individually - things actually came together really well.”

Lee attended Hawsker Primary School. Eskdale School and Whitby Community College, before heading off to Newcastle Music College, where he formed pop duo Howdi and experienced his first taste of success.

“A lot of people have been calling us ‘power pop’, which was a term I’d never heard in England,” said Lee.
