A Viennese Gala for New Year’s Day

The legendary Scarborough Spa Orchestra (founded 1912) embarks upon its 100th year with a sparkling gala concert.

The concert will celebrate the timeless traditional melodies of the Waltz King himself, Johann Strauss, together with well-loved music by his contemporaries and his successors in the field of popular light music.

The programme follows the New Year’s Day custom begun in the Strauss family’s home city of Vienna, and now celebrated worldwide. The great Strauss waltzes will be represented by the Emperor Waltz and the most famous of them all, the Blue Danube.

Lively polkas such as Tritsch Tratsch and Thunder and Lightning carry the music forward at a breath-taking pace, to be calmed by the lush tunes of Franz Lehar, who forms the link between the traditional Viennese music and the great musical comedies of the years to follow.

The Spa Orchestra’s last New Year’s Day Gala drew a huge audience. Viennese programmes are always extremely popular with lovers of light music.

The complex itself is a conference and entertainments venue offering a full range of conference, hospitality and entertainment facilities, with world class event management and technical audio-visual staff.

The concert takes place on Sunday at 3pm. Tickets are £11 for adults (£10 concessions).
