AN award-winning writer has hailed the Whitby area as her favourite part of Yorkshire where her happiest memories are.

Marina Lewycka, who won the Bollinger Everyman prize for A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian, said the walk along the cliffs from Whitby to Robin Hood’s Bay is another favourite, to be followed by fish and chips.

“It helps if the weather’s fine but maybe that’s too much to ask for in Yorkshire,” she said.

Marina also told the Yorkshire Post magazine that she is a great fan of Whitby-born author Margaret Storm Jameson, who wrote about Yorkshire in many of her novels.
