West Pier tribute for army man

PLANS are well under way to create a permanent tribute to a well known Whitby soldier who died two days before Christmas.

A bench dedicated to John Buck is going to be erected on Whitby’s West Pier after his friends and family decided it would be a fitting tribute.

John, an Artificer Sergeant Major with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers attached to the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, was heavily involved with the Save Whitby’s Piers campaign.

It had also been his idea to dedicate the town’s two piers to his fallen comrades Corporal Damian Lawrence and Craftsman Andrew Found who served under John.

The project is going to cost £1500 which will cover the bench itself, engraving and maintenance costs for the next 15 years.

A fortnight ago £200 to the cause was presented to John’s parents, Dawn and Ted, from the Fisherman’s Club where John was a regular when he was back in Whitby.
