AN OIL painting of Sandsend fetched almost £200,000 at a London auction last Wednesday.
Sandsend near Whitby, by LS Lowry, smashed its estimate by over £13,000 and sold for £193,250 at a Christies auction house.
The 14 inches by 22 inches artwork was painted by Lowry in 1953 and was expected to fetch between £120,000 and £180,000.
It was among 13 Lowry paintings once owned by the late millionaire hotelier and restaurateur Lord Forte which sold for £17,668,250 at the auction.
One of these pictures, of Piccadilly Circus in London, sold for £5,641,250, equalling the world auction record for a Lowry.
