Old Jack’s world premiere held in Staithes

Salty the Dog stole the show as Staithes got an exclusive premiere of Old Jack’s Boat last night (Friday).

The award-winning children’s television show is filmed in Staithes and returns to television this week for a second series.

Bernard Cribbins, who plays Old Jack and is known for his roles in Doctor Who and The Railway Children, said: “I’ve filmed in a lot of locations throughout my career, but there’s something about the sea air, the beauty and the friendliness in Staithes that makes it a special place to be.”

Old Jack’s Boat follows Old Jack, a retired fisherman who tells stories from his time at sea, helped by his eccentric friends in the village. His faithful dog and co-star, Salty the Dog, accompanies him everywhere.

Local children, residents and series producers were at the special screening at St Peter’s Church in Staithes, hosted by Welcome to Yorkshire and CBeebies.

The audience was also treated to an episode of the spin-off series, Salty’s Waggy Tales, a new short based on Salty the Dog.

Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: “It is fantastic that Old Jack’s Boat is back for a second series, beaming the stunning seaside village into the homes of thousands of potential visitors.

“Businesses have told us that they’ve seen an increase in people keen to see Staithes and show their children the photogenic seaside village where Old Jack lives. We hope the second series continues to attract even more visitors.”

The exclusive screening on Friday January 17 saw local children attend as well as executive producer Tony Reed, Head of Production Alison Stewart and series producer Dom MacDonald.
