IF Dracula was in the market for a settee, this would be the one he would get.
Local businessman Tim Lawrence (47), of Whitby Gothic Furniture, has developed a new range of bespoke Victorian furniture and his first item, The Vampire’s Chaise Longue, has been placed on display at Agars furniture store in Flowergate.
Mr Lawrence said: “It’s wacky but it’s comfortable.
“It looks like a Victorian piece of parlour furniture.”
The sofa is shaped like a traditional coffin and extras that can be purchased to add to the effect include brass, chrome or wrought iron handles.
The furniture should prove popular among goths visiting Whitby over the next few weeks, and came about when Mr Lawrence was on holiday.
He added: “We went to America in January and we saw this company making coffin couches.
“As soon as I saw it I thought what a good idea.”
The chaise longue will be completely bespoke and the standard model is priced at £1,475.
Should it prove a success Mr Lawrence said there are plans to expand the range: “There has been lots of interest on the goth forum.
“We have got different plans, so the range will get bigger.
“You can do all sorts, like a bed, but imagine how big it would be!
“The idea is when we go on to chairs, you can just buy one instead of a full set and put it in a corner, so it’s like a piece of art.”
