The Captain Cook Memorial Museum has invited local pupils to run the popular attraction for a day.

The move is part of a national event initiated by the organisation ‘Kids in Museums’ where kids across the country will be running their local venues.

After the success of the event over the past three years, the Captain Cook Memorial Museum in Whitby has invited Whitby secondary school students to take over.

Around 20 year 7 pupils from Caedmon College Whitby and Eskdale School are planning to deliver guided tours of the museum to the general public. They will also staff the desk, answer the phones and run the shop.

A spokesman at the Captain Cook Memorial Museum said: “A small group of kids will be the museum’s press office for the day interviewing people, writing articles, taking photos and adding to the museum’s Facebook page.

“The pupils have also invited a class from East Whitby primary school to take part in the afternoon.

“The pupils will receive training from museum staff in the morning and the doors will open to the public between 12.30pm and 3pm.

“The Takeover kids as well as the staff at the museum are very excited about this event.”
