Whitby Cricket Club get their new North Yorkshire and South Durham League adventures under way on Saturday (April 19), with the emphasis very much on home-grown talent.

The 1sts are at home to Northallerton in the league’s first division and the 2nds are away to the same opposition in the third division.

Chairman John Hall told the Whitby Gazette: “We have taken a conscious decision not to have an overseas player this year, but to give a chance to the local youngsters of the club who have come on leaps and bounds.

“We’re playing in a tough league – there are some really good players here, excellent grounds and full-time umpires. We will do very well to progress throughout the leagues.

“The first team especially will miss the runs Wes Ripper scored last year, but hopefully the rest of the lads will contribute with their extra year’s experience.”

Mr Hall said the club was fortunate to have the experience of Mike Stones, a grade one national coach with “boundless enthusiasm who is great for the club’s emerging youngsters.”

Paul Buck continues as captain and Steve Allen as his vice captain for the firsts and Andrew Wood and Steve Crowther continue for the 2nds.
