Whitby Cricket Club 3rd XI travelled to top of the league Blackhall 3rds on Sunday in the North Yorkshire and South Durham Sunday League.
Whitby travelled with a young side including seven players under the age of 18.
Blackhall won the toss and elected to bat first.
The experience of Blackhall’s openers showed as they got off to a strong start, despite some good bowling by Whitby.
The strength of Blackhall started to show in the middle overs as they increased the run-rate and eventually finished on 229-4 after the 45 overs.
In reply, Whitby got off to a shaky start, slipping to 23-3 before a partnership of 62 from James Fawcett and Rikki Lawrence put up some resistance, before Fawcett was dismissed for 25 with Lawrence finishing on 52.
Following that with some experienced batting combined with hard work from some young batsmen, Whitby managed to bat out the 45 overs, finishing 141-8 for a losing draw.
Whitby’s young side showed a lot of character against a strong and experienced side, which bodes well for the rest of the season, continuing at home against Seaton Carew 3rds on Sunday, starting at 2pm at the Turnbull Ground.
Whitby 1sts and 2nds’ games at the weekend both fell victim to downpours on the Saturday morning.
They will be keeping fingers crossed for better weather this weekend, with the 1sts travelling to Sedgefield and the 2nds due to entertain Seaton Carew 2nds in the North Yorkshire and South Durham League.
