Whitby cruised to a quickfire seven-wicket success at home to title rivals Billingham Synthonia side in Division One of the North Yorkshire South Durham Cricket League.
Synthonia, who were top of the table before the encounter, were all out for just 46 in 26.4 overs, skipper Will Donald taking superb figures of 5-17 from his 13.4-over spell which included six maidens, while his fellow opening bowler James Hall also took 5-24 from 13 overs.
Despite Donald then departing without getting off the mark at the top of Whitby’s reply, the hosts cruised to victory for the loss of three wickets, Matthew Towey unbeaten on 19 and James Fawcett not out at the other end of eight.
Whitby’s comfortable success sent them top of the Division One table, and they’ll look to stay there with victory on the road at Richmondshire this weekend.
Whitby 2nds lost out to Seaton Carew 2nds in Division Three.
The visitors batted first and could only post a below-par 137 all out.
It could’ve been a lot worse for Whitby had number nine batsman Dom Gallon not crashed seven fours on his way to 31 not out.
Adam Hogarth supported with a score of 25, while opener Liam Calvert and Thomas Laxton hit 24 apiece in Whitby’s total.
Whitby gave themselves hope of defending their modest total when Joe Hinchliffe dismissed Matthew Skirving with the first ball of the innings, caught by wicketkeeper Kieran Purvis.
However, despite a wicket apiece afterwards for Matthew Smith, Stephen Crowther and Hogarth, the remainder of the hosts’ batsmen all contributed as Carew made it to 138-4 in 31.3 overs to claim the victory.
The 2nds will look to bounce back from their defeat when they take on Norton 2nds at the Turnbull Ground tomorrow.
Whitby 3rds were held to a frustrating winning draw at home to Marton 3rds in the Sunday Conference South on Sunday, Harry Purves starring for the hosts at the Turnbull Ground.
The home side batted first, Purves top-scoring with 60, including eight fours and two sixes, with support from Tim Richardson (42no), Alfie Jacobs (34), Chris Shrimpton (33) and Aron Calvert (29) in their total of 226-9 from their 40 overs at the crease.
Purves then continued his fine afternoon by taking figures of 2-39 from an eight-over spell, with wickets also coming from Liam Calvert (3-25), Swales (2-17), and Aron Calvert (1-36).
This didn’t prove to be enough for the home side, captained by Tim Richardson, to claim the victory as Marton’s last two batsmen held on at the end to seal a share of the points and frustrate their hosts.
Marton ended up on 189-9 from their 40 overs, Whitby taking 15 points from the encounter.
The 3rds are on the road this Sunday when they make the trip to take on Thornaby 3rds.
