Mulgrave failed to secure a league and cup double when they suffered defeat by the narrowest of margins in the Cayley Cup final.

Simon Kipling’s side made 118-9 to tie with Seamer, who closed on 118-5 and took the silverware by virtue of having lost fewer wickets.

Craig Thompson, 36, and Mario Spagnuolo, 35, both starred with the bat for Mulgrave in Sunday’s showpiece at North Marine Road, but their efforts proved to be in vain as they lost out in cruel fashion.

The previous day, the Lythe-based side secured the Beckett League Division A title, following a 48-run victory over Cayton 2nds.

Mulgrave made 200-5 before restricting their opponents to 152-9, earning them a 19-point haul, which was enough to keep them in first place ahead of Sunday’s opponents Seamer, who finished the season in second place despite a final day win of their own over Grindale.
