Whitby too strong for Tioxide

Whitby travelled to Thornaby to play Tioxide on a very blustery day.

Whitby took a few minutes to settle in with three of the normal squad being at county trials.

Quick and accurate passing saw Whitby easily moving the ball around the Tioxide defence. A ball fed out from the right was then swept onto the stick of Lisa Mussett who hammered home the first goal.

Well-worked set pieces from Alex Bagnall to Karen Sanderson found Beth Sanderson in a position to eliminate the mid defence and find Beth Grason awaiting collection outside the D.

After 1 v 1 in the circle, Grason placed a lovely goal into the bottom right corner.

A mother and daughter combination found Jo and Dani Braithwaite working well on the left with Dani making an appearance on the pitch after quite some time – a pass found Dani level with the back line and scored a fabulous goal from an acute angle for 3-0.

Play was now flowing with Beth Sanderson and Lisa Mussett taking on the Tioxide defenders with gusto – Nicola Kent and Beth Grason moved on and off the ball tirelessly with Nic Kent being rewarded with her cushioned goal from a right cross.

The score was 4-0 at half-time with Whitby going into the wind in the second half.

A tougher second half with sun in the eyes found Whitby making silly mistakes and the Tioxide attack had a few lucky breaks which were quickly tidied up by Karen Sanderson and Alex Bagnall. Kirsty Dixon made a couple of epic saves.

Sarah Thompson pulled the ball back on the right to find Beth Grason positioned perfectly for a first time sweep into the net.

With minutes to go a well placed through pass from Lisa Mussett found Dani Braithwaite deflecting the ball into the net.

Another great team performance with superb passing and hockey skills.
