Whitby teenager is third best UK rider

Whitby horse rider Michelle Smith has been placed third in the UK in the Arab Horse Society Performance Horse Awards.

The competition is run over a year and points are gained in all ridden competitions.

Michelle (16) with her Pure Arabian youngster Shahir Neesaan, stable name ‘Bertie’ have competed in mainly show jumping competitions but also in hunter trials, dressage and ridden showing last year.

He is currently unbeaten in the ridden showing classes, even beating mum Lisa into second place at one show.

Michelle bought Bertie when he was 18 months old and has produced the horse herself.

Michelle has been invited by the Arab horse Society to parade two of her horses at the Arab Horse Society National Championship Show held in Malvern in July.

Michelle, a member of Goathland Hunt Pony Club, is a pupil at Whitby Community College but when she leaves school this summer, has been offered a place at Askham Bryan College to continue her studies
