Whitby rowing crews take to the Thames

WHITBY rowing crews will take to the waters of the capital when the Great River Race takes part in London next weekend.

The Friendship crew of Rebecca Smith, Andy Smurthwaite, Chris Stead, Mandy Davidson, cox Morgann Russell and passenger Kelly Betts is on a separate mission to raise funds for MacMillan with money already pouring in.

But anyone wanting to sponsor them should call the Friendship Rowing Club on (01947) 604751.

They are among three crews from the Friendship taking part in the 21-mile race from Docklands to East Ham on Saturday 17 September, along with a team from the Fishermen’s - brothers Barry, Derek and Alan Brown and Darren Archibald - who will be rowing in a skiff.

Whitby’s very own William Riley, crewed by the Fishermen’s last year, will also be among the 330 boats on the Thames but will this year be rowed by a group from Poole lifeboat HQ in Dorset.

You can follow the race action online at www.greatriverrace.co.uk - each boat is equipped with a GPS tracker so you can click the boat icon and watch as it passes other crews. Other information supplied will include the speed of the boat in knots and what distance it has covered.
