On the 20 February Whitby Rifle Club, Bowls Section, held its annual mixed pairs competition.
It was held as a knockout with partners drawn at random with three woods each, over nine ends.
The one preliminary match, was between Bill Nicol with Pat Harrison against Ian Harrison and Olive Tordoff with Bill and Pat winning through, due to playing consistently well. As there was one lady short, Olive went back in to partner Eddie White, who then beat Roly Clark and Irene Pearson in a good game.
Bill and Pat then beat last year’s winner John Pybus with Eileen Clark as they continued to play at a very high standard. Mick Wade with Rose Isherwood had to go to an extra end against Doug Hancock and Lola Campbell and it was only due to an excellent last wood from Mick that he and Rose won through. Don Isherwood and Lucy White lost against David Marshall and Hilda Brown, who were playing on the top of their form.
In the semi finals, Bill and Pat had a hard game as they beat Mick and Rose. Whilst in the other semi, David and Hilda went ahead of Eddie and Olive, staying there until the last end, when Eddie killed the end twice, before being beaten.
The final, between Bill Nicol and Pat Harrison against David Marshall and Hilda Brown, was very close and excellent to watch, with bowling of the highest quality and it was only on the last two ends that Bill and Pat moved ahead for a well deserved win.
This is the first time Bill has won this competition and Pat has been runner up for the past three years.
