Whitby Maroons’ rugby union team can cap a glorious season by being crowned champions in their next league match.
The Maroons have topped Durham and Northumberland League 3 all season and won promotion with their recent 57-5 demolition of Yarm.
The Whitby side edged past Chester-le-Street 15-10 on Saturday and had their lead cut by one point, from 12 to 11, after nearest challengers Houghton also won, and gained a bonus point.
But with only three games to go, Maroons can seal the title against Houghton when their league fixtures resume a fortnight tomorrow.
Coach Darryl Grason said: “This sets things up nicely for The Maroons’ next league game on March 28, when it will be first v second at the Showfield.
“A Whitby win would see them gain revenge for their only defeat this year and win the title. There are some great games coming up.”
