YOUNG Whitby gymnast Megan Coates is somersaulting her way into another successful year, writes Fraser Bell.
2011 proved to be a fruitful year for award-winning Megan, winning the Manchester Open and coming joint fifth in the British Espoir Championships last summer.
The Caedmon School pupil was recently crowned junior sports person under 14s winner at the Scarbororough and District Sports Council awards.
Megan (12) was selected onto the Great Britain’s world class start squad - the third consecutive year she has been selected.
After a big year, Megan can now look ahead to some very exciting challenges in 2012.
Megan is heading for Orlando, USA, in February, for the Magical Classic competition.
She will compete against other gymnasts from all over the world, not necessarily of the same age group.
There is no respite for Megan, however, as she will be competing in the English Championships in March, down in London.
Megan puts her success down to a lot of hard work and dedication alongside constant perseverance from her personal coach.
While training at Notts Gymnastics Academy, Megan trains up to 30 hours in the gym per week.
Rated in the top 10 gymnasts from her year group, Megan has been selected to train once a month at the National Sports Centre in Lilleshall.
In these training sessions, she will be trained by the National team GB coaches.
Her mum,Claire said: “It’s going to be another busy year ahead.”
Claire thanks Caedmon School for supporting Megan’s gymnastics.
