Whitby’s Adam Lyth today hit his maiden Test century for England, outscoring team-mate and record-breaking skipper Alistair Cook.
While Cook became England’s leading all-time run-scorer with a knock of 75 against New Zealand, Lyth upstaged his fellow opener with a knock of 107, sparking wild celebrations at Headingley.
Cook said of Lyth after the game: “I’m so pleased for him personally after a tough Test match at Lords.
“To score a first hundred at your home ground in front of such a fantastic crowd and play as well as he did was a fantastic moment.”
In an exciting second Test, England trail the Black Caps by 97 runs in the first innings, but with five wickets intact.
There are three days to go.
