Whitby coarse angling season opens with memorial match

The 2015 match calendar opened with the Mike Collier Memorial match fished on Poplars Lake at the Oaks.

The colder than expected spring weather meant there was less margin cover than would typically be seen on Poplars Lake, and the extensive cutting back of the tree cover left a lot of exposed water.

The first Whitby and District Coarse Fishing Club match of 2015 saw an excellent turnout of 20 anglers, with a number of new club members looking forward to a good match.

Because of the good turnout, pegging was tight with a number of anglers fishing on adjacent pegs.

There was a lot of expectation on Kev Little the 2014 club champion, who had yet again drawn a form peg, with peg two coming out of the bag.

Poplars Lake had fished well throughout the winter, with most of the good weights coming from peg 1 or 2.

However for this match, the higher numbered pegs were the ones to draw.

New club member Ryan Middleton also drew well with on peg 13, with a good margin swim to his left.

Steve Collier on 32, initially caught well in the deeper water near the aerator and then went to his left at 10m on pellet to pick up some good carp.

Pete Agar on 25 had difficult pole shipping with the high bank but caught well on pellet and then started to pick up fish on 6mm meat.

Ryan Middleton kept fish coming to the net by pinging hard pellets on his long pole line, and then maintained his catch rate with fish from the long margin swim.

Steve Collier following the success seen on peg 25, also started to fish meat to the left and built an excellent weight, but unfortunately just missed out on the match win for 2nd place. Pete Agar finished up 3rd, with 1st place going to Ryan Middleton who fished a great match to take home the Mike Collier Memorial trophy for 2015
