Whitby A get off to encouraging start

WHITBY A started well at the beginning of the season with a 6-2 win against Scalby A at home on a windy evening.

Graham Holyfield and Andrew Hardy played well especially, finding the sun a problem as the evening worn on.

Sue Jackson and Magda Phillips played consistently throughout.

The second match played away against Scarbrough B was nearly called off, because of persistent rain.

The courts were very slippery but Andrew Hardy and Tom Donald put up some good resistance against the opposing men.

Sue Jackson and Jean Fardoe had a close match in the ladies but after a two-year gap, Jean played many good volleys at the net. In the mixed, Tom Donald performed some amazing backhand cross-court shots, showing the benefit of his previous coaching from the club. The result was a 6-2 win for Whitby A.

Another home match was played against Malton with the opposing ladies suffering from the strategically placed lobs executed by Magda Phillips, landing perfectly on the baseline in the windy conditions.

Richard Buxton agreed at short notice to make up the team and played well, he partnered up with Sue Jackson in the mixed. In the last match, Andrew Hardy - who had been serving well throughout the evening - had a nasty fall and ended up having to retire. As a result they had to concede the rest of the points.

Whitby A lost 3-5.
