Ian Duffield, a 72-year-old athlete from Sleights, was in action over the weekend at the North Eastern Veterans Atheltics Championships at Monkton Stadium, Jarrow.
Ian, who trains three times a week, is reigning Yorkshire Veterans Champion at the 100m and 200m.
He was delighted to come away with two silver medals and two improved times from last season. In the over 70s category, he clocked 16.1 for 100m and 34.9 for 200m.
Ian loves to train in his local surroundings and makes good use of all the natural resources such as the seawall, beach and undulating country lanes to perfect his speed drills. He was relatively late starter in to athletics, coming in to it after a long career in local football. It was an especially poignant achievement for Ian –a member of Loftus and Whitby Athletics Club - as he has recovered from cancer and a heart bypass. Ian will defend his Yorkshire title later in the season when he hopes to improve his personal bests again.
