WHITBY Community College’s 16-year-old cycling ace Mike Thompson is setting the pace in the British Cross-Country Mountain Bike Series.
Thompson, who competes for the team Mike Thompson TEF/Richardsons Race Team in Scarborough, is currently third in the youth series.
He said: “Things have been going very well for me and I just have to keep pushing on and trying to pick up wins.
“It is a very tough competition but I have managed to do quite well and with a couple of rounds remaining I have a real opportunity to be a success.”
Thompson is from near Guisborough and attends Whitby Community College and has been racing a couple of years.
He added: “I have been interested in cycling for many years but only been competing for a couple.
“I linked up with Richardsons a while back and they have been brilliant.
“Debbie at the shop and my coach Mark Grange have really helped me progress so I would like to say a big thank you to them.
“Their support has been superb and without them I would not be competing at the level I am.”
Debbie Richardson said: “Mike is doing extremely well and he is both very focussed and determined.
“This is the first year we have teamed up to sponsor him alongside TEF transport and he is a pleasure to work with.
“The amount of training he puts in is first class and he works very hard. Mike has the potential to become a top name in the sport if he continues to progress like he is and we wish him all the best.”
