The winter season of Saturday Stablefords was brought to a close this week with a Team Stableford.
The team score was the best three cards from the four players, with the fourth card only being used in the case of a tie.
This year the winning team was Bill Estill (40), Richard Barker (39), Garry Walker (38) and John McMurran (33) giving a team score of 117.
Individually, James Jewell had the best score with 41 points, ahead of Bill Estill on 40, Richard Barker, Craig Thompson and Martin Shackleton on 39, Colin Hood, Andrew Wood and Garry Walker on 38 and Dean Bennett, Tam McConville, Gordon Mackenzie, Ivan Ross, Bob Scott and Peter C Brown on 37.
The competition for the best 10 cards over the winter was one of the closest for years, with Peter C Brown in first place with a total of 356, Jim Hall one behind and Robin Sisson a further shot back. Ivan Ross had 347, Les Underwood 336 and Kevan Little 334.
Men’s captain Richard Marshall and his partner Luke Asbury won Sunday’s Fourball with a 61. Three pairs tied on 64 and their positions had to be sorted out over the last nine holes, Jason Halley and Alex Wiggins coming second, Adrian Brown and Mike Coates third and Paul Ventress and Brian Jamieson fourth. Next Sunday is the final Winter Fourball and the last chance to improve in the eclectic and best six cards.
The Scarborough & District Alliance at Bridlington fell to the weather and the event was cancelled, meaning that North Cliff win the Pennant with a season-long aggregate of 1851, four ahead of Filey. Whitby finished 7th with 1910.
The Ben Fell Trophy, due to be played in conjunction with this event, will now be played with the first event of the next winter season. The curtain comes down on this season’s games with an Am-Am at Driffield tomorrow with a shotgun start at 9am. Whitby’s teams are Dean Bennett, Tam McConville, Steve Ellis and Alistair Lyth starting on the 7th tee; Kieran Noble, Bob Scott, Richard Marshall and Chris Noble on the 12th; Alex Wiggins, Sam Wiggins, Peter Easton and Mike Clarkson on the 18th.
Tomorrow sees the start of the new season at Whitby with the Opening Stableford with a starting sheet in use. Sunday is the final Fourball
Betterball and there will be a Midweek Stableford on Wednesday.
Don Stanley won £100 in this week’s 200 Club draw.
Tony’s Tip: I is for Imagination. Visualising what you are trying to do before playing the shot is always important and never more so than around the green. Try to see the flight of the ball, where it should land, how much it will bounce before rolling up to the hole. Have a couple of practice swings which fit what you are trying to do, then go ahead and execute the shot without delay, not giving yourself the chance to have any doubts.
