Swelling Maroons playing for places

TOMORROW sees Whitby Maroons return to league action as they travel to face Houghton-le-Spring.

An even-looking match is in prospect with the home side having an identical record to Whitby’s, of two wins and one loss.

Captain Steve Allen returns at fly-half, resiliant veteran Dave Straker comes in at centre and speedy Joe Lenton switches to full back.

With James Newton, Ollie Roberts and Connor Clennan all unavailable, the versatile Anthony Craig moves to the back row with the big tackling Andrew Grady making a first start in the unaccustomed number eight role.

On an exciting looking bench there are season debuts for Pete Stentiford and new full back Kristien Pollock.

A club spokesman said: “This will be a very hard game and with more players becoming available allied to larger numbers training, players have been warned they are playing for their place.

“Hopefully this will be seen as a positive move and will raise the bar in terms of competition and commitment.”

Anyone travelling to watch the team should be at the club for 12.30pm.
