Super Stainthorpe’s second half strike

Danby Ladies Hockey team travelled to Malton on Saturday to defend its unbeaten run of matches.

Starting with only 10 players due to work commitments, Danby soaked up the pressure well from Malton’s good passing play during the first fifteen minutes. However gaps opened up quickly and Malton scored two well taken goals in a matter of minutes.

Though the team finally had a full complement on the pitch at half time Malton still held the upper hand and their rolling subs system was working well, whilst Danby were running on tired legs.

Defenders Sheila Slade, Laura Jackson and Rosie Welford in particular had tackled and cleared incessantly; keeper Alison Marsay made several crucial saves to keep the score at 2-0 at the break.

Within minutes of the restart Danby attacked with much more determination. A strong surge from within Danby’s half saw Vicky Griffin shaking off three defenders before slipping the ball to Deb Callaghan whose pass to Julie Stainthorpe was hammered home.

After end to end play, accurate passes from Karen Dowson and Kath Hogarth cut through Malton’s defence for striker Stainthorpe to grab a second vital goal. Malton had several breaks broken up by staunch tackling from Rosie Welford and Becky Jackson who found Beth Havelock and Vicky Griffin in space down the left to create several more chances for Danby.

A switch of play by Kath Hogarth found Callaghan on the half way line who quickly carried the ball to Malton’s circle and the cross to Julie Stainthorpe was converted smoothly for her first hat-trick of the season.

Final Score 3-2. Player of Match Julie Stainthorpe.
