Sleights Bowling Club played their annual pairs knockout competition for the Gordon Fletcher Trophy in mixed weather.

Twenty one teams took part, all drawn at random. Each round was played over 11 ends with four woods per player.

There were many very close games in the preliminary and first rounds, with two of them having to go to an extra end.

In the quarter-finals, Terry Reid and Joyce Blythman beat Alan Rutland and Freda Lawson. Brian Raw and Hilda Brown beat Tom Wheeler and Beryl Raw. Eric Sanderson and Pat Harrison beat Eddie White and Jean Moore, while John Pybus and Rex Summersgill beat Bill Nicol and Joyce Turner.

In the semi-finals, Terry and Joyce beat Brian and Hilda, while John and Rex beat Eric and Pat.

In the final, John and Rex, who had both been playing excellent bowls all weekend, continued in the same way and got off to an early lead against Terry and Joyce, who tried valiantly to stem the tide, but were just unable to do so, with John and Rex winning the trophy.

The Club Triples League, which this year contained 11 teams and is played every week through the season, has now been completed.

It was a very close finish, with the winning team being Terry Reid, Don Isherwood and Pat Harrison on 15 points.

Second was the team of Eddie White, Daniel Lewis and Tom Wheeler, also on 15 points, but with less shots scored.

In third place was Terry Bogg, Ian Roberts and Irene Pearson on 13. And fourth was Mick Dean, Peter Franks and Eileen Clark on 12.
