Danby Hockey Club ladies shared the spoils in an even contest with Thornaby on Saturday.
The home side made a strong start to the game with early possession.
They kept Thornaby’s defence busy from the off, with attacks from Laura Anderson and Kieran Horner on the right and down the left courtesy of Ginnie Jackson and Leonie Crowther, resulting in some near misses.
Thornaby, looking more organised and confident, enjoyed several counter-attacks which saw Danby’s defence spring into action.
Decisive blocking from Paige Howard and Josie Bowes on the right and Alison Marsay on the left along with Danby stalwart, Tiney Tarrant, slowed Thornaby’s attackers down, but they were aggressive in the D and managed a few shots on goal, wide of target.
Midfield co-operation and skilled play by Deb Callaghan and Jenny Dowson gave Danby a break.
A confident run and well placed cross from winger Anderson, found Ginnie who opened the scoring for Danby just before half-time with a trademark screamer.
The second half was more balanced with both teams working hard for advantage.
Runs from Bowes, Anderson and Callaghan created chances which were met by the visitors’ competent defence. Danby battled in mid field with Chloe Sisson and Toni Brewer intercepting well.
A period of sustained attack from Thornaby, during a ferocious hail shower, including several short corners, saw some surprising saves from stand-in keeper, Catherine Adamson, until a strong strike from the far right gave Thornaby the equaliser.
Danby’s midfield and attack work continued without further result.
A fair result with a good standard all-round.
Danby’s player of the match was Laura Anderson.
