It was a case of third time lucky for Whitby rider Cara Shardlow at the regional qualifying event at Bishop Burton over the weekend.
Following a nightmare build-up for Shardlow, she kicked off her bid to make the nationals at Hartpury in April aboard young horse Sandonista.
Shardlow said: “Sandonista had a few mistakes understandably, but I was so pleased when he finished fourth, just missing out on a nationals ticket by one place.”
Sandonista returned the following day for the elementary gold and freestyle, finishing a creditable third and fourth spot.
Mario Lanza was up next, and Shardlow was impressed with his efforts.
She added: “This was his first regionals and a huge experience for him, he was very tense throughout but made no huge mistakes to gain 10th.
“He will have learned a lot from the experience.”
Detanator, who had very little preparation, was up last.
Shardlow added: “I was expecting explosions as he finds the arena at Bishop Burton quite electric.
“He was very hot in his advanced medium freestyle but just contained himself to have a clear round and take second place, finally I had my nationals ticket.
“I thought he was a lot more rideable for the Prix St George freestyle and again no mistakes, I was a bit disappointed with his score of 66.89% but he came third.
“I’m so pleased how they all did and we now have a trip to the nationals at Hartpury in April.”
