Rabbits hop to first alliance trophy for many years

Whitby Golf Club’s Rabbits were jumping for joy after winning their first alliance silverware for many years, taking the Lisa Jane Trophy with a five-card aggregate of 193 over the course on Friday.

Whitby’s star performers were Tony Orton and Mel Purvis, who scored 43 Stableford points. Other Whitby scores: 40 John McMurran and John Carter; 38 Colin Hood and Byron Blessed; 37 Chris Noble and Mike Storr; 35 Billy Hardy and Fraser Seaton, Clive Lyth and Roger Turton.

After their successful outing at Bridlington, Whitby’s Tigers will be hoping for an equally good performance in the next round at Driffield tomorrow. Whitby’s team is: 10:08 James Jewell and Dave Upton; 10:16 Dean Bennett and Tam McConville; 10:24 Simon Walker and John Hartley; 10:32 Paul Ventress and Steve Ellis; 11:52 Richard Marshall and John Wightman; 12:00 Mike Coates and Robin Sisson; 12:08 Martin Shackleton and Mark Kerr. Chris Batchelor produced a remarkable round to win the Midweek Stableford with 47 points, which gave him a seven point margin of victory over second-placed Roger Davison.

Mike Rothwell, Bill Estill and Mike Storr had 39 points, with Tam McConville on 38.

In another exceptional score, two handicap Neil Coates scored 45 points to win the first Winter Stableford from Simon Walker, who scored 44.

Garry Walker and Steve Dosdale had 40, with Richard Brown on 39 and Tam McConville on 38. Mark Kerr and Martin Shackleton will represent the club in the 2015 Daily Mail Foursomes competition after scoring 69 in the qualifying round, beating Chris Batchelor and Andrew Wood over the back nine holes.

James Jewell and Dean Bennett had 70, James Morrison and Kevin Barker 71 ½ and Craig Thompson and Steve Thornton 72.

In the ladies’ section the delayed September Par was won by Jennifer Ratcliffe with 4 down. Marjorie Mackenzie and Janet Wightman were 5 down and Kath Walker 6 down. The qualifying round for the 2015 Daily Mail Foursomes was postponed, and will now take place on Tuesday.

The second Winter Stableford takes place on Saturday, with the first Winter Fourball on Sunday – remember to be included in the fourball you must put your name down on the list by 4 pm on Saturday.

The ladies Daily Mail Foursomes QR is on Tuesday, there is a Midweek Stableford on Wednesday and the ladies October Par is on Thursday.

All members are invited to take part in a Florida Scramble with a 9.30 shotgun start on the morning on Saturday November 1.

This will be followed by the annual prize presentation in the club house at 2pm. Please put your name down on the entry sheet if you are going to take part.

Tony’s Tip: playing conditions can become more challenging as we move into the winter months, and if your grips are getting a bit hard and shiny this really shows up in cold weather.

Check your clubs now, and get the grips replaced if they are slippery – it’s hard to believe the difference this will make.
