A MONSTER fish which would almost certainly have scooped the prize at the Whitby summer angling festival has been landed, offering hopes of more colossal catches off Whitby’s waters.
The 56lb 12oz halibut caught by Peter Strickson off Paul Eddon’s boat Trot On was confirmed as a port record for Whitby, beating the previous best by more than 6lb.
Had Peter been taking part in the festival - which begins tomorrow (Sat 18) and runs until Sunday 10 July - the £5,000 jackpot would, according to local anglers, have surely been his.
Peter, of Huddersfield, caught the huge halibut using squid although landing it proved some feat.
It took around 15 minutes to land the fish as it started to peel line off his reel but his persistance paid off with a catch worthy of winning any competition.
The festival is run by Whitby Charter Skippers’ Association with daily prizes also available.
Keep an eye out on the Whitby Gazette over the next few weeks for results and pictures.
