WHITBY Rugby Club under 16s kicked off the new season with a victory in perfect conditions for running rugby.
The first half was a closely contested affair in which both teams were a little rusty after the summer break.
The visitors opened slightly the better and scored a well-worked score out wide. Whitby took some time to settle but replied when Richard Pasco showed his strength to level the scores.
Back came the visitors to take advantage of some weak tackling by the hosts and the once more go into the lead. In an entertaining first half switching from end to end, Miles Locker showed his strength to brush off a number of defenders to level the scores at 10-10 at the break.
It was evident towards the end of the first half that the home team were beginning to get into their stride as their handling in the backs improved and the forwards began to dominate the scrum and the line-out.
The start of the second half saw Whitby move up a gear, winning more good line-out and ruck ball that gave their strong three-quarter line lots of possession to run at Acklam and make big inroads into their defence, particularly in midfield.
Whitby put the visitors’ goal-line under sustained pressure and were only held out by Acklam’s resolute defending.
The pressure soon told as Richard Pasco again burst through to score his second try, as he quickly followed a scintillating 50m outside break that saw him use his pace to score his hat-trick of tries with George Green kicking two conversions to give Whitby a 24-10 lead.
Busy scrum half Jan Jacobs was rewarded for his support play with a try out wide.
At 29-10 it looked as though the game was over but Whitby gave away an unnecessary penalty from which Acklam scored.
Towards the end of the game, the home team seemed to have relaxed and allowed the visitors to score a converted try under the posts to leave an anxious last few minutes before sealing a deserved victory.
It was a pleasing first performance in which the forwards secured good set piece ball and the three quarters some showed some strong line breaks.
Man of the match went to Richard Pasco for his treble of tries with the whole of the pack having put in a good all-round effort up front.
