LOCAL pair Paul Dixon and Brian Mould won the NQA World Quoits Championships pairs at Beamish Museum for the first time.

Played on new pitches, the pairs competition on the Saturday provided success for the area.

Paul of Fylingthorpe and Brian, of Danby/Ugthorpe, defeated Whitby brothers Paul and Mike Mendelsohn 21-15 in an exciting final.

The semi-final between the eventual winners and Ian Carr and Richard Leak was also a close game, with the champions winning 21-17, while in the other, the Mendelsohns beat Danny and Jon Loader from Lazenby 21-8.

The individual competition played the following day didn’t prove quite as successful for local players with the title going to recent Wilkinson Sword winner Richard Watson of Darlington, again defeating Mike Mendelsohn in the final with a convincing score of 21-3,

Mendelsohn was once again left disappointed after a tough run of games beating Paul Dixon, Shaun Turner and Ian Carr on the way to the final.

Perhaps these hard games took their toll as he seemed to have no answer to the excellent play of Watson in the final.

Mickleby’s Richard Leak gave the champion a scare in the semi, just going down 21-17.

John Ward, Fylingthorpe, was the only other local player to reach the last eight.
