Mulgrave Under-13s completed an incredible fightback to beat Pickering by just three runs in the Derwent Valley Junior League Cup final on Tuesday night at Nawton Grange.
Pickering looked to be cruising to victory, needing only six runs off the final five overs with plenty of wickets in hand.
Mulgrave’s total of 103 never really looked like being enough, despite a good start courtesy of skipper Sam Spenceley 27 (retired) and Charlie McKernon 25 (retired).
Ruby Hick took 2-2 and Harry Sollii-Bevan bagged 2-11 for the young Pikes team.
Some big hitting at the top of the Pickering order from Isaac Edmond 27 (retired) and 23 from skipper Joe Barker put them firmly in control.
Even when Joey Kelly took the wicket of Morgan Elven, who had smacked 22, it left Pickering still handily placed at 98-4 with five overs to go.
But Daisy Stokoe came back to bowl a wicket maiden, before Kelly and Jack Allanson held their nerve to spark the late fightback.
They bowled the next three overs superbly, conceding only run, and aided by some excellent fielding from the whole team, Pickering were left needing only four to win from the final over.
With five dot balls at the start of Allanson’s final over, Pickering could only manage a single off the final ball to finish on 100, to hand Mulgrave victory.
Allanson finished with top figures of 3-15 for the cup-winners.
Pickering claimed their revenge the following night with a home league win against Mulgrave with just three balls to spare.
