Maroons must defend well at ‘pick and drive’ Shields

This Saturday sees Whitby Maroons travel for their first away game in the league this year at North Shields.

The Shieldsman enjoyed a victory in their first game of the season this year, winning a close match at local rivals Wallsend by three points.

Maroons’ head coach Darryl Grason said: “Shields always have a strong pack and play a pick and drive game in an attempt to dominate the opposition.

“It will be imperative that the Maroons’ young side are sound defensively but also take the game to their opponents.”

In other league games last Saturday, newly relegated Sunderland, who lost all league games last season, look to have recruited well as they smashed Prudhoe 76-0, Redcar had a good away win at Seaton Carew, Ryton took out Ashington away from home and Whitley Bay proved too strong for Hartlepool .

“It is looking to be a very competitive league and over the first month, it will be interesting to see who emerges as promotion favourites,” he added.
