Whitby Maroons’ rugby team are gearing up for life in Durham and Northumberland League division two, having won promotion last year.

Steve Allen continues as 1st XV captain with Matt Russell vice captain and pack leader.

With the forwards losing Jack Grady to the Navy and outstanding backs Dave Straker and Christian Pollock leaving the area, the club will be looking to unearth new young stars this year who can follow the example of Bruce Reid and Dan Marsay, who both became key members of the Maroons’ squad last season.

Training continues on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6.30pm with Maroons coach Darryl Grason and forwards mentor Rich Harrison.

“With the first game a week tomorrow at Knaresborough in the first round of the Yorkshire Shield, now is the time for the players to put the hard yards in at training.”

The Maroons’ league campaign then kicks off the following Saturday when they host the team who pipped them to the third division title last season, Hartlepool BBOB.
