Whitby Maroons celebrated their title-winning season at the players’ end of season presentation and dinner on Friday.
The Maroons won the third division of the Durham and Northumberland League and coach Darryl Grason said: “A great season and our success was down to the young players who came in and really took to our philosophy of open running rugby.
“We worked hard at training and that paid dividends.”
“Our veterans, especially captain Steve Allen and vice-captain Matt Russell, both had an excellent campaign and steered the side on the field.
“Next year will bring new challenges against bigger clubs and we will have to lift our fitness standards again if we are to avoid the yo-yo effect of the last six seasons.”
“One of our biggest priorities must be to get a regular second team up and running so we have effective back-up for the first team and somewhere for of our younger promising players have a chance to learn the game.”
The evening was organised by club manager Peter Stentiford and traditional fish and chips served by Fusco’s.
