With just over a week to go before the inaugural Whitby Seafoods Junior Beach Classic volleyball competition, local players are training extra hard.
Anyone who fancies joining in the sessions on a Monday evening run by local team North Riding Eagles - the club hosting the beach tournament on May 21 - is welcome to get involved.
“After school to early evening, players of all ages and ability levels can be found having fun leaning the skills of the game,” Eagles’ head coach Anthony Laffan said.
Local schools East Whitby, Eskdale, Botton and Caedmon College all have teams and players taking part in the volleyball festival which starts on the Friday, May 20, when Great Britain stars Chris Gregory and Jake Sheaf will be putting the local youngsters through their paces at Eskdale School.
The excitement on Saturday starts at 10am on the beach, next to the pier.
There will also be an adult four-a-side tournament running alongside the junior pairs competition making it a double delight for spectators.
“The question on everyone’s mind is how will our local players do?” Laffan added. “They are up against schools and players from York, Acklam, Pickering, Malton, Hull and Scarborough.
“Among the visiting competitors will be some good overseas players, including Cypriot international Edrim Karasalih, so it’s going to be tough.”
