Leaders Fylingdales feel Piranhas’ bite

Fylingdales and Whitby’s netball girls felt the Piranhas bite in the first half of this match as they struggled to get into the game after a two-week lay-off.

Piranhas, on the other hand, were quick out of the blocks and were soon two goals up.

Dales tried to fight back but were guilty of forcing some passes and rushing shots that went astray as the quarter finished 4-3 to the Piranhas.

Dales worked hard in the second quarter to keep in the game. Some great defending from Anna Welford and Jordan Spencer kept the score down, with some great battling in the centre from Beth Mead, Beth Helliwell and Lorna Ready making sure Dales attakers Jen Milburn and Chloe Purves got enough passes to even the scores to 8-8 at half-time.

In the third quarter, Dales started to find their feet and once they slowed down play and stopped the long passes, the Piranhas’ scoring chances were restricted and ‘Dales pulled out a slender 14-9 lead.

In the final quarter, Kelly Storr and Emily Watson worked tirelessly in the centre to make sure the Piranhas had to fight for every play and shooters Chloe Purves and Jen Milburn scored four more goals with the Piranhas only scoring one late goal.

This was one of the hardest games Dales have had to play but once again, great determanation and team spirit saw the girls overcome their opponents and take the victory to stay top of division two.

Player of the match: Anna Welford.

This week, Dales play in the division two cup tournament.
