The former skipper of Avanti and Sea Urchin charter boats came back to Whitby during the Asian country’s rainy season and his knowledge of local waters paid off.

Mick landed a 24lb 2oz ling from Trot On on Friday, easily eclipsing the previous highest catch, which was Peter Lockwood’s 17lb 4oz cod earlier in the tournament.

There was local success in the ladies’ section, with Sarah Miller of Whitby taking the honours with a 10lb 5oz cod.

The juniors’ crown went to Jack Vero, with a 13lb 14oz ling – the youngster also took second place.
