TWO Community Sports Fairs within the borough have been granted the “Inspire” mark by the London 2012 Inspire programme.
The London 2012 Inspire programme recognises innovative and exceptional projects that are directly inspired by the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The community sports fairs are being organised by Scarborough Borough Council’s Sports Development Unit, in conjunction with the Central Urban Area Forum, linking in with their chosen theme for the year of art, culture and sport.
The date for both events is Saturday 21 April, and all sports clubs are been urged to put the date in their diaries.
The Whitby and district event will take place from 10am until noon at Whitby Leisure Centre with the Scarborough and Filey event running on the same date from 2pm until 4pm at Scarborough Sports Centre, Filey Road, Scarborough.
SBC’s Sports Development Officer, Matt Hewison said: “These events work so well on a number of levels for community sports clubs; they are a great way of raising awareness of your club and the participation and volunteer opportunities that they have to offer community members. “It is also gives a chance to network with other clubs on examples of good practice.
“Clubs can give practical demonstrations within the main sports hall at both facilities.
“In partnership with relevant partners such as Seachange and North Yorkshire Sport we are delivering a series of workshops as part of the events, focussing on sports funding, safeguarding and CRB, coaching, Sportivate funding, Sport Makers as well as sports governance.
“These workshops will be open to clubs who attend on the day and will be free of charge.
“From a community perspective the events are like a ‘one stop shop’ of sporting opportunities.
“People can come along and speak to local clubs about what they do and how they can become involved in that sport.
“We really need the clubs and the community to engage with this project to make it as successful as possible.”
There will also be a free prize draw for every attendee; including prizes such as gym memberships and swimming passes.
