Whitby Sea Anglers Association returned to match fishing after the Christmas break with good news and congratulations to four members.

Dave Hambley won the Cloughton Festive Sweep Stake on Sunday December 29; Matthew Garbutt caught a specimen cod - 12 lb 06 oz on Thursday January 2; Ben Laws won Sunday’s Amble Open with seven fish for 14 lb 11 oz while Rob Allison won the Ship Inn Open on the same day with 4 lb 14 oz.

All have been entered into WSAA Members Trophy Cabinet.

Sunday night’s four-hour match was fished over high water with the last hour of flood.

With plenty of colour in the water, strong south easterly winds brought heavy rain which made fishing uncomfortable.

The sea state was growing south easterly but too late to bring the fish in to feed.

Due to there being a clash of open matches, Amble Open and The Ship Inn Open, only 12 members fished the evening’s match, as some had fished an Open as well.

Only five members were at the scales with a mixed selection of fish.

Man of the match was Peter Horbury, winning his first match with nine fish for the heaviest bag of 5 lb 11 oz, using a two hooked rig, light gear (for distance), fresh lug worm, tipped with mackerel.

Dave Perrett weighed-in the heaviest fish of 3 lb 3 oz.

12 members weighed-in 16 fish for 18 lb 2 oz.

1 P Horbury with 1 whiting, 4 billets & 4 flat fish for 5 lb 11oz, 2 D Perrett 1 codling & 1 rockling for
