Whitby athlete Jay Ferns celebrated his 19th birthday in style by wrapping up his second successive McCain Yorkshire Coast 10k victory.
Ferns shaved a second off his winning time from 2015, finishing in 32 minutes and 56 seconds to stave off the challenge of Arron Larkin and James Kraft in second and third respectively.
The Loftus & Whitby AC runner said: “I didn’t have a very wild Saturday night, that’s for sure.
“Winning the 10k more than makes up for that though.
“I beat my time from last year by one second, but wasn’t really interested in a time, I just ran tactically as the plan was to win.”
Ferns is a big fan of the Scarborough-based event, apart from a section of cobbled ground on the seafront route.
“The course is great, except I hate running on the cobbles,” added Ferns.
“The marshals are well appreciated and the support you get is great.”
Ferns doesn’t have time to dwell on his win though as he prepares for a busy month ahead.
He added: “I have the Leeds Abbey Dash 10k next weekend and would like to have a good run there.
“Then I have the European Qualifiers in Liverpool at the end of the month.”
