Fenby two shots clear in Stableford

As the weather relents a little things are starting to return to normal at Whitby Golf Club.

The Saturday Stableford took place with a good field and was won by Colin Fenby with 34 points over 15 holes.

Steve Purvis was second with 32, Ian Cowie and Dave Kirk had 31 and Brian Grange, Graham Bedford, Bill Estill and Jim Hall had 30.

Bob Scott and Mike Coates had 29. There were no twos, so the sweep rolls over to next Saturday.

A select field took part in Sunday’s Fourball and enjoyed a good day in spite of the snowy forecast.

Paul Ventress and Andy Pearson came out the winners with 55 ahead of Adrian Brown and Mike Coates on 56.

Tam McConville and Kieran Noble were third on 58.

The Scarborough & District Alliance due to be played at Filey was postponed due to

waterlogging, and will now take place on Sunday (17 Feb).

The entry sheet is on the board for the next round, at North Cliff on Saturday 23 February.

Members please note the AGM will take place in the club house at 7.30pm on Wednesday 20 February.

Peter C Brown was this week’s winner of £100 in the 200 Club draw.

Tony’s Tip: this week, D is for Drive.

Many people feel this is the most important shot in golf, but really it is all about making the approach to the green easier so that you can get the ball nearer to the hole.

Distance is a help, but position is important too, so unless the fairway is wide enough to land a jumbo jet, you should rarely throw all caution to the wind and hit it flat out.

Rhythm, balance and timing will achieve good distance and will still allow you to retain good control over direction and consistency.

One point to remember: with today’s large-headed drivers, make sure that you tee the ball up good and high, then sweep it off the top - don’t hit down on the driver.
