The National Volleyball League took a break to enable time for student and junior tournaments and it has been a success for North Riding Eagles’ younger players.
Caedmon College players Fiona Searle, Georgia Hutchinson, Rachel Ashburner and Max Galloway have all played their way into the Yorkshire Under-16s regional squad.
They were joined by fellow North Riding star Rosie Donoghue of Eskdale School.
Eagles coach Anthony Laffan said: “We are always delighted for our young players when they make the progress and get selected.
“It is a great partnership we have with the local schools and it is nice for the parents to have a reward for all the running around they do.”
The University Student Cup saw five North Riding Eagles players make the last 16 in their respective university teams.
Micky Elias (Cardiff), Catherine Laffan (Leeds), Eva Elias (Liverpool), Rebecca Laffan (Newcastle) and Eleanor James (Oxford) all enjoyed progress with their teams.
The strong North Riding Eagles presence at the finals of the Student Cup is testament to the high standards at the club.
Not only did the local volleyball players do well to get into their respective university first teams, they were competing against scholarship players brought in from overseas specifically to boost university rankings.
All the Eagles players did well over the two-day final play-offs and the club saw Rebecca Laffan help her Newcastle team to become the 2016 /2017 champions.
This weekend sees a return to the National League action and the relegation battle that the Eagles find themselves in intensifies over the next few weeks as the teams locked in the fight for survival play each other.
With North Riding playing Newcastle and Coventry playing Derby, there could be changes to the positions at the bottom after this weekend’s clashes.
