Danby hockey team win title for first time

DANBY Hockey Club confirmed the league title in style, with a convincing 4-0 win over last years champions, having remained unbeaten all season.

The home side opened the scoring within the first minute thanks to captain Debbie Callaghan’s far post touch.

The pressure continued throughout the first half with Vicky Griffin coming close, getting on the end of a powerful Kath Hoggarth ball through the centre.

Karen Dowson and Rosie Welford worked hard in midfield to cut out any Pickering hits upfield and switch the ball to keep Danby in the attacking end.

The half-time score remained 1-0, but a valuable early goal in the second half arrived as Griffin finally got on the score sheet. She then doubled her tally five minutes later with an impressive reverse stick flick.

Danby continued to play confidently, the defence dealing with Pickering breaks calmly, with Nicky Graham collecting the ball from centre back and pushing up to create further chances.

Jenny Dowson was unlucky not to add to the scoring with an ambitious flick which skimmed the top bar.

Cath Wignall had a brilliant game on the wing, capping off the scoring as she was perfectly placed to get on the end of a lovely ball through from Hoggarth, making Danby league champions for the first time in their 22-year history.

the club thanks the Downe Arms, Castleton, for their sponsorship this season.
