A WIDOWED angler spent his birthday enjoying precious time with his son at sea – and lured the best catch of the day in the process.
Colin Smallwood of Ripley landed the 10lb 13.5oz pollock from Sea Urchin II on a wwarm day on Thursday.
Skipper Mick Leonard said: “Colin recently lost his wife and his son thought a couple of days away together would give them both a welcome break.
“They both vowed to return in the summer to try to replicate their win.”
The first week of the spring angling festival, run by Whitby Charter Skippers’ Association, was hit by high winds at sea with three days being cancelled.
A Whitby man is currently in line for the £1,000 jackpot.
Paul Brittan’s 15lb 0.5oz cod was cauight on Friday and is the leader overall with six days remaining.
